Water🚰
As climate change boosts risks, water insecurity is growing – and needs a plan (IWMI)
The U.S. population has doubled over the past 50 years, while our thirst for water has tripled. With at least 40 states anticipating water shortages by 2024, the need to conserve water is critical (EPA)
10 ways to save water at home
Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth
Run washing machine/ dishwasher when you have a full load
Use a low flow shower head and faucet aerators
Fix leaks
Install a dual flush/low flow toilet
Don’t overwater your lawn or water during peak periods
Install a rain barrel for outdoor watering
Plant a rain garden/catch stormwater runoff from your roof+.
Monitor your water usage and get a home water audit
Share your knowledge with your neighbors
How does climate change affect heavy rain? It all starts with the release of greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide and methane. As humans keep burning fossil fuels, the atmosphere gets hotter. That hot air holds more water vapor, and so when it rains, it rains harder (NPR). The air can generally hold around 7% more moisture for every 1C of temperature rise. As such, a world that is around 4C warmer than the pre-industrial era would have around 28% more water vapour in the atmosphere. But this increased moisture will not fall evenly across the planet. Some areas will see increased precipitation, while other areas are expected to see less due to shifting weather patterns and other factors.(Ref)

Act 🙂
August and the dog days of summer are here and winding down. Adapting to our current conditions is essential. Acting accordingly is necessary. Finding joy and levity is also crucial. Get close to nature. Enjoy it. Appreciate it. Love it. Save it. Share your stories with others through community with joy. Be the light and the hope. In the midst of death, life persists; in the midst of untruth, truth persists; in the midst of darkness, light persists. (Indian lawyer and social activist Mahatma Gandhi)
